DESPRES Rodolphe : 1er de poule après ses 3 victoires se retrouve face à CHO Eon Rae KOR en 1/16ème de finale.

BERTIN Christophe : Tête de série sera confronté à KONECNY Tomas CZE.

Nineteen year old Laurie Phai Pang made a successful return to the international scene at the Brazilian Open by qualifying for the main draw in the Women’s Singles event in the afternoon of Thursday 22nd June 2006.

In her opening match, the previous day, she beat Brazil’s Valesca Maranhao in straight games but the decisive group encounter against Chile’s Berta Rodriguez was a much closer affair. The French player recovered from a three games to one deficit to secure victory.

Laurie Phai Pang who made successful return to international competition in São Paulo
Laurie Phai Pang won 9-11, 9-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6.

Knee Problem
Injury has forced the French teenager to be absent from the international scene but after a gruelling seven games encounter against the experienced Chilean there were no ill effects.

“I had a knee problem and last July I had to stop playing; it was not until February this year that I was able to play again”, said Laurie Phai Pang. “It was a problem with the tendons surrounding the knee, in September I had an operation and for a time I couldn’t even walk!” One year ago the pain for the talented French girl had become too much and it was not until the end of February this year that training could re-commence.

“Everything seems fine now”, continued Laurie Phai Pang who trains at INSEP in Paris. “Naturally, I’m pleased I won but it was close.”

Experience
Berta Rodriguez is an experienced player, in March she won the Women’s Doubles event at the Latin American Championships and she caused Laurie Phai Pang a host of problems.

“At the beginning of the match I had problems returning her service”, explained Laurie Phai Pang. “The first two games were close but I lost them both and I was anxious, I managed to win the third but then lost the fourth.”

Consistency
The French player composed herself; she remained calm and was totally focused on the task in hand. “I must admit, I thought I was going to lose, after her service she attacked strongly and I was making errors”, explained Laurie Phai Pang. “I didn’t like it, in the last three games I just concentrated on playing consistently, on putting the ball on the table and gradually I started to play better.”

It was a display of character and for Laurie Phai Pang, a most welcome return.
