Mattenet a méme sauvé des balles de matchs :

don’t know how he did it and neither does Adrien Mattenet of France; somehow in his first match in the Qualification Stage of the Men’s Singles event at the Chile Open in Santiago on Wednesday 23rd April 2008 he beat Russia’s Sergei Tyapkin.

Equally Sergei Tyapkin must be equally bemused as to why he lost.

The facts state that Adrien Mattenet won 11-9, 10-12, 4-11, 3-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-5.

However, the score line does not tell the full story.

Russian Lead
Sergei Tyapkin, supremely fit, an athlete, led by three games to one and 10-7 in what was clearly the toughest match in the open duels.

It seemed that for the Russian he was to enjoy better fortunes than in Brazil the previous week when he had lost both his group matches but had been very competitive.

Recovery
Adrien Mattenet saved all three match points in the fifth game and then saved one more at 10-11 down before winning three points in row to secure success. Sergei Tyapkin smiled ruefully.

A disappointment for the Russian but it seemed that mind, body and soul were back together as he led 8-4 in the sixth game; his power proving crucial.

Momentum
Alas he won only one more point in that game.

The momentum had now swung in favour Adrien Mattenet who then won the deciding seventh game with a degree of comfort.

Bemused
The Frenchmen left the court bemused, shaking his head as much as to say “How did I do that?”

Nobody knows how. “My head was not good and for the past six months I’ve not had good results; my feeling for the table tennis ball has been poor”, sighed Adrien Mattenet who was clearly not pleased with his performance.

“Recently I’ve just kept losing”, continued the Frenchman. “I just kept fight, Sergei is very powerful but I feel I can play better.”

Good Omen
No doubt he can but in the seventh game his backhand was in good shape and it saw him through to victory and at the end of the day there is one important factor above all.

He won and if you win playing badly, you win a close match who knows what fortunes may lay in store.
