Nineteen year old Adrien Mattenet performed the recovery of the day in the opening round of the Men’s Singles event at the Liebherr Brazilian Open in Belo Horizonte on Friday 13th April 2007.

He trailed Russia’s Vasili Lakeev by three games to nil and in the seventh game saved no less than four match points before clinching victory on his one and only match point.


For Vasili Lakeev the dreaded omen of Friday 13th being thought unlucky proved true; for Adrien Mattenet it was quite the reverse.

The Frenchman won 5-11, 3-11, 5-11, 15-13, 11-8, 12-10, 13-11.

Mistakes
“In the first two games I made many mistakes returning his service”, said Adrien Mattenet. “He was too strong on the first ball in the rally.”

Vasili Lakeev dominated the first three games; the Frenchman was left gasping for air as the Russian’s power won point after point. However, the bespectacled Adrien Mattenet is a fighter, he never gives up, no situation for him is hopeless and when he won points lobbing from the back of the court, a certain degree of confidence disappeared from the face of Vasili Lakeev.

Forced Back
“I kept being forced back”, continued Adrien Mattenet. “Also, I think I rushed at times in the first three games; in the fourth game I started to make some changes to my service and from then on I did better.”

He used many more services with minimal spin than in the first three games and he was more positive; especially from the backhand he looked to topspin the return of service. The varying degrees of spin posed problems but the main reason he won was his character, he fought and fought and fought.

Lead
From a desperate situation he clawed his way back to three games all and in the seventh game started to impose himself on proceedings.

He went into a 6-3 lead, the stage at which Vasili Lakeev called `Time Out’; he then won the next point to move ahead 7-3 and it appeared that he was going to complete the recovery in some style.

More Freedom
Vasili Lakeev, to his credit, had other ideas. Playing with more freedom as he now faced defeat, he won the next seven points to lead 10-7! The balance of the contest had swung in a matter of seconds and it swung again.

Adrien Mattenet levelled at 10-all, Vasili Lakeev held match point at 11-10 but that was to be his last. Adrien Mattenet won the next three points and he had the victory.

French Revolution
There was no wonder he raised his fists in the air and screamed in exultation. He had won a memorable match and importantly he had shown strength of character.

It was a remarkable recovery, it was the modern day French Revolution and it was on the head of Vasili Lakeev that the guillotine fell.

Fin de l'aventure pour Guga

Il perd 4 à 1 sur Otcharov, surement un plus gros client que Kuzmin

Il a peut être aussi laissé des forces sur ce match précédent et ça peut influer

Si il pête la forme comme ça au prochain match à Villeneuve ça devrait faire mal à la table
